Claude Code vs Codex vs Gemini CLI vs Cursor CLI: which coding agent in 2026?

30 September 2026 · 3 min read

Short answer: Claude Code is the strongest all-round coding agent in 2026, especially for long, multi-file work. Codex CLI is the best value if you already pay for ChatGPT, and it runs sandboxed by default. Cursor CLI makes sense if your team is on Cursor. Gemini CLI is now mainly for teams on Google's paid Gemini Code Assist or API, since Google ended personal-account sign-in in June 2026.

All four do the same basic job: you describe a change in plain language, and the agent reads your repository, edits files and runs commands in your terminal. The differences are in model quality, safety defaults, how you pay, and how they fit your other tools.

Claude Code

Claude Code reads the whole repository, plans, edits across many files and runs your tests. It can split a big job across sub-agents, each with its own context window, and bring their results back together. It also has a desktop app, a web version and VS Code and JetBrains extensions, so you are not tied to the terminal.

Use it for: features that touch many files, refactors, and anything where getting it right the first time matters more than cost.

Codex CLI

OpenAI's Codex CLI is open source and is included with ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, Edu and Enterprise. It is built to run inside a sandbox with network access off by default, which makes it a good fit for letting an agent work unattended.

Use it for: well-scoped tasks you want to run autonomously, and when you already pay for ChatGPT so the agent costs nothing extra.

Gemini CLI

Gemini CLI is Google's open-source terminal agent, known for a very large context window and tight Google Cloud integration. On 18 June 2026 Google stopped accepting personal Google accounts for it. It still works through Gemini Code Assist Standard or Enterprise, or with a paid Gemini API key.

Use it for: teams already on Google Cloud or Gemini Code Assist, and very large codebases where context size matters most.

Cursor CLI

Cursor CLI brings Cursor's agent to the terminal and lets you pick from the models your Cursor account offers, or leave it on Cursor's default. It is the natural choice when your team already standardises on Cursor and you want the same agent in scripts, CI or a wrapper app.

Use it for: Cursor teams who want an agent outside the editor.

Which one should you pick?

  • Best quality, price second: Claude Code.
  • Already on ChatGPT: Codex CLI.
  • Google Cloud shop with Code Assist: Gemini CLI.
  • Cursor team: Cursor CLI.

You do not have to choose only one. Many developers keep two: a strong model for deep work and a cheaper one for small fixes. An agent IDE such as Zokie runs all four side by side, each task in its own git worktree, and can pick a model per task for you (see small model or frontier model).

FAQ

Is Claude Code better than Codex?

For long, multi-file changes most developers find Claude Code stronger in 2026. Codex is better value if you already pay for ChatGPT, and its sandbox-by-default design suits unattended runs.

Is Gemini CLI still free?

Not for personal Google accounts. Since 18 June 2026 it needs Gemini Code Assist Standard or Enterprise, or a paid Gemini API key.

Can I use more than one coding agent on the same project?

Yes. Give each agent its own git worktree so they never edit the same files at once. See how to run several AI coding agents with git worktrees.

Which coding agent is open source?

Codex CLI and Gemini CLI are open source. Claude Code and Cursor CLI are not.
