The best Cursor alternatives in 2026 for agent-first developers

30 September 2026 · 4 min read

Short answer: if you want a stronger agent, try Claude Code. If you want another AI editor like Cursor, try Devin Desktop (formerly Windsurf) or Zed. If you want to run several agents at once and review their diffs, try an agent IDE like Zokie or Conductor. If you want open source with any model, try Cline or Aider.

Cursor is a good editor. People look elsewhere for three reasons: credit-based pricing that runs out on heavy agent use, wanting to use the model subscription they already pay for, and a way of working where the agent writes the code and you mostly review it. This list is for that last group.

Disclosure: we build Zokie. It is ranked on the same terms as everything else here.

1. Claude Code

The strongest move away from Cursor is often not another editor but a better agent. Claude Code reads your whole repository, plans, edits many files, runs your tests and can split work across sub-agents. It comes with a paid Claude plan, so there is no separate credit pool to watch.

Best for: developers who are happy to let the agent drive and review afterwards.

2. Devin Desktop (formerly Windsurf)

The closest like-for-like swap. It is a VS Code-based editor with an agent built in, now Devin's local agent after Cognition renamed Windsurf in June 2026, plus a command center for managing agent sessions.

Best for: people who want to stay in a full editor but try a different agent.

3. Zokie

An agent IDE rather than an editor. Every task gets its own git worktree and branch, the agent you already pay for writes the code, and you review a diff that becomes a pull request. A Board shows every task by status, so several can run at once. On paid plans, Auto mode picks a smaller or larger model for each task to cut cost.

Best for: running several tasks in parallel and reviewing diffs instead of typing. Not for: heavy manual editing (keep a normal editor for that), or Linux. Invite only for now.

4. Conductor

A Mac app that runs Claude Code, Codex and other agents in parallel, each in its own worktree, with a diff view per workspace. The app is free for local use; a paid tier adds cloud workspaces and collaboration.

Best for: Mac users who want parallel Claude Code sessions with little setup.

5. Cline

An open-source agent inside VS Code. You bring an API key or a local model, and it asks before each file edit or command. Great control and transparency; costs follow your API usage.

Best for: VS Code users who want open source and any model.

6. Aider

A long-standing open-source terminal agent that commits each change to git as it goes, which makes it easy to undo. Model-agnostic and scriptable.

Best for: terminal users who want small, reviewable commits and full control.

7. Zed

A fast native editor with built-in agent support and the ability to plug in external agents. Less of an extension ecosystem than VS Code-based editors, but very quick.

Best for: developers who care about editor speed and still want agents.

How to pick

  1. Do you still type most of the code? Stay with an editor: Devin Desktop or Zed.
  2. Does the agent type most of it? Use a strong agent (Claude Code) and a way to review its work.
  3. Do you want several tasks going at once? Use an agent IDE or runner: Zokie or Conductor, or set up git worktrees yourself.
  4. Do you want open source? Cline or Aider.

FAQ

What is the best free alternative to Cursor?

Cline and Aider are free and open source; you pay only for the model you connect. Zokie's IDE is also free and runs on the model subscription you already have.

Is Claude Code a Cursor alternative?

Yes, for agent-first work. It is an agent rather than an editor, so many people pair it with a lightweight editor or an agent IDE for reviewing changes.

Can I use Cursor's models outside Cursor?

Yes, through Cursor CLI, which uses the models on your Cursor account. Zokie can run Cursor CLI as one of its agents.

What happened to Windsurf?

Cognition acquired Windsurf in 2025 and renamed it Devin Desktop in June 2026. Existing projects and settings carried over.

About Zokie

Zokie is a lightweight agent IDE for macOS and Windows. Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI or Cursor CLI write the code, each task on its own git worktree, and you review the diff. It is invite only for now: enter an invite code or join the waitlist.
