Vibe coding on Windows in 2026: the tools that work
Short answer: Windows is a first-class platform for vibe coding in 2026. Cursor, Devin Desktop and VS Code with an agent extension all run natively. Claude Code and Codex CLI run on Windows too, and many developers still prefer them inside WSL for Linux-style tooling. If you want several agents working at once with diff review, Zokie runs on Windows 10 and 11. Some popular agent apps, such as Conductor, are Mac only.
Disclosure: we build Zokie. It is ranked here on the same terms as the other tools.
Native Windows or WSL?
WSL (Windows Subsystem for Linux) gives you a real Linux environment inside Windows. It matters because many projects, scripts and agent workflows assume a Unix shell.
| Your project | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| .NET, Windows desktop apps, PowerShell tooling | Native Windows |
| Web apps (Node, Python, Go) with Unix-style scripts | WSL 2 is smoother |
| Mixed team, some on Mac | WSL 2, so everyone runs the same commands |
Keep your code inside the WSL file system (for example ~/code), not under /mnt/c: file access across the boundary is much slower, and agents read a lot of files.
The five tools below all run well on Windows 10 and 11.
1. Cursor
Cursor runs natively on Windows and works well with WSL through its remote support, as VS Code does. It is the easiest start if you want an AI editor.
2. Claude Code
Claude Code runs on Windows, and it also has a desktop app for Windows. For projects with Unix-style scripts, many developers run the CLI inside WSL. Either way you need a paid Claude plan or an API key.
3. Zokie
Zokie is an agent IDE that runs natively on Windows 10 and 11 (and macOS). Each task gets its own git worktree and branch, the agent you choose (Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI or Cursor CLI) writes the code, and you review the diff before it becomes a pull request. About 14 MB. Invite only for now.
4. VS Code with Copilot or Cline
VS Code is at home on Windows. Add GitHub Copilot's agent mode or the open-source Cline extension and you have a capable setup without changing editors.
5. Devin Desktop (formerly Windsurf)
Devin Desktop runs on Windows with the same features as on Mac: a VS Code-based editor with Devin's local agent built in.
What about Codex CLI?
OpenAI's Codex CLI runs on Windows, with WSL recommended for the smoothest experience. If you pay for ChatGPT, it is included.
Mac-only tools to know about
Some agent apps are macOS only at the time of writing, including Conductor. If a guide assumes a Mac, check the tool's download page before you plan around it.
A quick Windows setup
- Install Git for Windows, and WSL 2 with Ubuntu if your project uses Unix-style scripts.
- Install Node.js or Python (inside WSL if you use it).
- Install your agent: Claude Code, Codex CLI or Cursor, and sign in once.
- Clone your repository (inside WSL's file system if you use WSL).
- Open it in your editor or agent IDE and start with a small task.
- Review the diff before merging; see how to review AI-written code.
FAQ
Can I vibe code on Windows without WSL?
Yes. Cursor, VS Code, Devin Desktop, Zokie and Claude Code all run natively. WSL helps when your project's scripts assume Linux.
Does Claude Code work on Windows?
Yes, natively and inside WSL, and Anthropic also offers a Claude Code desktop app for Windows.
Is Conductor available on Windows?
Not at the time of writing; it is macOS only. Zokie is one alternative that runs parallel agents in worktrees on Windows.
Is Windows slower for AI coding agents?
Not noticeably when files are on a fast local disk. The main slowdown is agents reading Windows files from inside WSL through /mnt/c; keep code inside WSL if you use it.
